Abstract

Doctoral studies are specific virtual sub-organizations within institutions of higher education with specific areas and activities in research and education. They can be seen as complex systems in which the unique organizational complexity needs to be explored in order to identify how managerial hierarchical levels and their constitution influence resource planning and management. This is important because this also impacts strategic management processes within the institution of higher education which must be measured and managed effectively in order to allow the institution to operate with quality and within planned budget. In this research appropriate methods were conducted to develop a generic functional and management model which demonstrate the main management framework of a generic doctoral study. The structure of the multi-level management bodies of doctoral study are responsible for the execution of its main strategic objectives that are also proposed in a generic strategic objectives map.
