Abstract

Scientific research is one of the most important and most frequent activities at universities worldwide. It depends on exchange of scienti?c knowledge, which is disseminated by means of scholarly publishing, usually in form of articles in printed scienti?c journals. Publication of articles represents the investment of scientists' time and effort and it is an indicator of merit, academic quality of scientists, and serves as a criterion for the future allocation of funds for new research. Today, the scientific journal is undergoing a transformation, initiated by ICT and other factors which will shape the future of exchange of scientific ideas. The internet has introduced a new set of innovations and challenges related to publishing and distribution of the scholarly output. To identify possible problems and challenges editors and editorial boards of journals are facing during the process of management of scientific journals (low quality article manuscripts, insufficient financial support for printed versions of journals, low-tech environment in which slows down journal preparation for publishing, insufficient help to journal editors overwhelmed with different responsibilities, etc.), a research of journals in fields of science, technology and medicine (STM) in Croatia, a research was initiated. This paper will present results from that research.
