Abstract
The current paradigm of scientific communication is transforming into a new one based on exchange of scientific information in electronic information environment. The new paradigm should offer more ubiquitous access to scientific information, easier publishing of results of scientific research, easier exchange of information among members of academic community and preservation of information in the digital information environment. At his moment, scientists are looking for reliable electronic information resource which would enable them easy access to information and long term preservation of their research papers and research data. Digital repositories present such an information resource which aims to improve exchange of scholarly information on the global scale. Digital repository is an institutional digital archive of the intellectual product created by the faculty, research staff, and students of an institution and accessible to end users both within and outside of the institution. It is expected that digital repositories will play a very important role in communication in science in the coming years. This paper will present most important characteristics of digital repositories and their role in development of e-science.
