SPECIAL EMPHASIS

Big Data – Learning Analytics (LA)
The amount of structured, semi-structured and unstructured data that is being generated every day is growing significantly. Such very largeamounts of data coming from different sources impose challenges on traditional (relational) databases and on the applications that were onceused to analyse the data. The term Big Data subsumes the large volumes of data that come from various sources that also vary in structure. New waysof the efficient storing and the management of such large amounts of data represent a challenge. Furthermore, some of the problems in this contexinclude the questions used to answer how to analyse, query and visualize such data. And how to utilize Big Data to make better decisions is evenmore interesting question. Therefore, a big potential sits in Big Data. At the same time, we can all witness how some companies, that have taken theadvantage of Big Data, have gained the competitive advantage and have found answers to cost reduction, smart decision making, etc. In thatcontext learning analytics can be taken into account as well. Learning analytics is dealing with the educational big data or sets ofstudent-related data with the purpose of supporting students and teachers in reaching their educational and personal learning goals. Learninganalytics contributes to the implementation and to the enhancement of student-centred teaching and learning. Especially, the Conference welcomesresearch papers that include the predictive learning analytics for students, teachers and decision makers, the assessment analytics, theaccompanying algorithms as well as the confirmed practices of using learning analytics in schools, higher education and in virtual learning environments.

VENUE

Varazdin is a charming and hospitable baroque town on the right bank of the Drava River in the north-west of Croatia, 79 km north-east of Zagreb. It has a population of over 40,000. You can visit the town's official website at http://www.varazdin.hr. The Faculty building, adjacent to the town Cathedral, used to be a monastery. The building overlooks the picturesque central square with the Town Hall, one of the historical buildings gathered around the square. The Town Hall, reconstructed in the 16th century, contains typical elements of both Gothic and Baroque architecture. A Faculty web camera enables a real-time view of Central Square (http://www.foi.unizg.hr/hr/web-kamera).
